Why Missoula? Why Now?

There are places you visit, and places that claim you.
Missoula is the latter.
Norman Maclean once wrote, "The world outside was full of bastards, the number increasing rapidly the farther one gets from Missoula, Montana," and while it’s a line often repeated with a wink, there’s truth stitched into it. This town is different. Softer in its humanity. Sharper in its intellect. Braver in its tenderness.
Missoula is a place where people are allowed to be fully themselves. Where enthusiasm isn’t embarrassing, obsession isn’t shameful, and loving something- books, art, ideas, each other- out loud is not only tolerated but celebrated. There’s a reason our Saturday Markets feel less like commerce and more like communion. A reason makers’ fairs here inspire loyalty that borders on cult devotion. Creativity isn’t a side hustle in Missoula; it’s a civic value.
Nerds have always had a voice here. MisCon made sure of that decades ago, carving out space for fantasy, science fiction, costuming, role-play, and imagination long before it was trendy. Our world-class public library stands as proof that stories matter- that access to them is a right, not a luxury. Organizations like Hush Hour create intentional, welcoming spaces for readers of all levels, reminding us that quiet joy and shared presence are radical acts.
Missoula runs on care. On people doing work not for profit, but for purpose. For community. For the belief that experiences- beautiful, strange, intimate experiences- are worth protecting. There may truly be more nonprofits per capita here than anywhere else, and what that creates is a foundation of trust. Of showing up. Of honoring one another.
BOUND is an extension of that ethos.
BOUND is about gathering. About reverence without rigidity. Devotion without dogma. It is a celebration of stories, bodies, desire, and connection- held in a city that understands how powerful it is to be seen and welcomed exactly as you are.
And Missoula in the fall?
That’s when the veil thins.
Crisp mornings that demand hot coffee and slower breaths. Evenings dipped in gold and smoke. Wool socks and scarves and the feeling that something is about to begin. The landscape itself invites transformation. The colors insist on drama. The air feels conspiratorial—like it knows a secret and is daring you to lean closer.
Why Missoula?
Because it knows how to hold us.
Why now?
Because the world is hungry for beauty, for ritual, for gathering with intention.
Because anything feels possible here.
And because some stories need the right setting to come alive.
BOUND couldn’t happen anywhere else.
